Russian Orthodox Church in Exile

Statement of the Hierarchical Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia dated October 26/November 8, 2001

The Hierarchical Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in Exile under the Chairmanship of His Eminence the Most Reverend Metropolitan Vitaly, First Hierarch of the ROCIE, determines to declare:

1. The absence of canonical and eucharistic communion with the Moscow Patriarchate—a non-ecclesiastical organization;

2. (in accordance with the resolution of the Hierarchical Council of ROCOR in 1974) The cessation of the hastily established eucharistic communion by the ROCOR Synod in 1994 with the Synod of Resistors under the Chairmanship of Metropolitan Cyprian of Oropos and Fili, due to his unorthodox teaching on the Church (about "sick and healthy members of the Church in the realm of 'correct understanding of faith'") and the recognition of the Sacraments of the new-stylites as valid (see Metr. Cyprian "Ecclesiological Theses", ss. 2 and 5);

3. The confirmation of anathemas on the heresy of ecumenism by the Hierarchical Councils of ROCOR in 1983 and 1998;

4. The absence of eucharistic communion with the Serbian Church participating in the ecumenical movement.

The Hierarchical Synod of ROCIE (i.e., ROCOR under the omophorion of Metropolitan Vitaly) informs the beloved pastors and flock of the Church of Christ that it has no communion with the current synod, headed by Archbishop Laurus (Shkurla), not so much because of the desire of this synod to "unite with the Moscow Patriarchate" (although the very "desire for transgression" in spiritual life is a sin), but because of the open confession by the supporters of this synod of their eucharistic communion with the Serbian Church participating in the ecumenical movement and having liturgical communion with the Moscow Patriarchate (which brings them under their own synodal anathemas of 1983 and 1998), and the recognition by Archbishop Laurus' synod of the so-called "glorification of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia" by the false church (MP), which not only elevates a non-church to the dignity of the Church of Christ but also constitutes an outright lie, for the Holy Hieromartyr Metropolitan Joseph of Petrograd was not glorified.

The true and complete glorification of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia was performed by the Holy Church in 1981.
